Strategy & Tactics Press publishes four military history magazines (Strategy & Tactics, World at War, Modern War, and Strategy & Tactics Quarterly) distributed in the US and internationally in print and digital format. Decision Games produces several lines of history strategy board games – one game line is paired with the magazines to make Game Edition issues that combine a magazine and a game.

We are seeking a motivated and talented Designer to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a range of experience with subscription publications, digital conversion, branding and marketing, and product development from concept to completion. We are not seeking an expert in every area, but someone with strengths in some of these areas and a willingness to learn new design skills. The Designer must be able to work on several projects at the same time and meet schedules and deadlines.

Primary duties include:

  • Meet with the Managing Editor and Art Director to discuss the appearance of upcoming issues including artwork types and other visuals to be used for each article.
  • Create artwork and conduct photo research in preparation for magazine layout.
  • Complete magazine layout and move issues through pre-press and proofing.
  • After printing, complete digital processing of issues, and upload issue to archives.
  • Create game component: game boxes/packaging, rules booklets, playing cards, game boards and playing pieces. Delegate specialty tasks to in-house and contract artists as needed.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Schedule and prioritize tasks with excellent attention to detail.
  • Contribute to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
  • Ensures operation of equipment by completing software updates, preventive maintenance requirements, restocking inks and papers, troubleshooting malfunctions and requesting repairs, and evaluating new equipment and software to improve performance and efficiencies.
  • Maintain technical knowledge by attending design workshops, reviewing professional publications, participating in professional societies.


  • Must have experience using publication related software such as Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook, and FTP clients. An expanding knowledge of WordPress, html, and social media platforms is a plus.
  • 2+ years of design experience preferred. Must provide samples of previous work.
  • Completed or progressing towards a Bachelor degree in Graphic Design, Product Development or related field is a plus.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation and be willing to travel in the U.S. up to 2-3 weeks per year to attend seminars to expand knowledge and skills.

Compensation will be determined by experience. Healthcare and retirement plan eligibility 60 days after the first month of hire.
